Silver is a very soft and malleable metal with use it develops rich patina or sheen. This tends to get discolored or tarnished when exposed to sulfur compounds in the air, or from contact with certain foods. If the smudge is not removed, the stain will become dark grey to black in color and completely cover the original silver color.
